Gerhard Fankhauser, born June 24, 1967 in Zell am See/Austria
In my childhood I was listening to my grandmother's stories and songs that were warming my heart on some long cold winter nights.
Later, on my journeys I kept listening to tales and the music of many people of very different cultures.
With beduins of the desert, Himalayan yogis, monks of sacred monasteries in Jerusalem and simple folks in some village; everywhere I was experiencing music as a universal language of any soul as well as a bridge between different worlds.
Many years of travelling made an impact on my life and all experiences and inner images grew to change into sounds, melodies and songs.
By encountering many precious people and also encouraged by the feedback of my concerts I gradually began discovering my roots as a bard.
I consider the way of a bard as an inner attitude and higher vocation and I feel that music is an expression of a timeless truth, that brings us harmony and peace.
|
There have always been bards and travelling singers.
For us, music is a sacred art, a bridge between heaven and earth.
One cannot become like us, one has to be like us.

My music
Aged 10, I started making music on the guitar. In my youth years I was playing with different rock and blues bands and loved jazz.
On some first of my year long journeys a more silent, solely acoustic music was developing itself, containing many folk elements and improvisation, old traditional songs as well as my own compositions and I was mostly playing on the mandola.
Over the past 10 years, the Spanish lute or „Lauta” became my main instrument and since some years also the Arabian lute or „Oud”.
My instrumental style is being strongly influenced by celtic-medieval, Spanish, Oriental and Indian music.
I studied the basics of Indian vocal music as well as the art of overtone singing, which has made a huge impact on my musical work.
Using the fundamental sound of the monochord, a multi-stringed but tuned to the same note instrument, overtone singing keeps beeing a source of inspiration and wholesome experience over and over again.
For several years I have been keeping up intense studies of harmonical and mystic principles, mainly from Pythagoras, Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan, as well as contemporary harmonic science and music therapy.
All these teachings confirmed my confidence that music is based on a universal and higher order, the law of harmony. In my musical work I always attempt to build bridges, between inside and outside, east and west, old traditions and modern times.
